How To Make Google Chrome Portable

Many people are happy to stick with the default browser set up when they fire up their computer for the first time, which means Edge if you’re a Windows 10 user and Safari if you’re on an Apple Mac. Both browsers have improved massively in recent years, but part of that improvement is down to the growth in rival browsers like Google’s open-source alternative.

Chrome is no longer the young upstart it once was, and its pioneering spirit is often forgotten in the mists of time. It was Chrome’s sleek tab-driven interface with minimal real estate that was adopted by Firefox and then Internet Explorer. Chrome was the first to provide a resource-friendly browser that loaded quickly and didn’t suck the life out of your system, although again the competition has now caught up – and in some cases – surpassed its achievements.

Oh, Chrome was also the first to adopt a rapid release cycle, so if you’re fed up with a new browser number appearing in the About menu every few months, you can thank Google for that too.

  3. In the 'Choose an app' window, click Google Chrome. To easily open Chrome later, add a shortcut to your taskbar: On your computer, open Chrome. In the Windows taskbar at the bottom, right-click on Chrome.

Chrome may no longer look like the dazzling young starlet, but it more than holds its own against the competition. It’s still quick to load, quick to perform and easy to use. It bundles the Flash plug-in so you don’t have to download it separately and the browser sync function makes it easy to back up and sync your settings across multiple computers.

While the competition has definitely caught up, Chrome has enough going for it to keep existing users happy supporting the browser that has led to so many improvements in the way we view and access the web.

Chrome Portable 87 is now in the Stable channel. This is the 64-bit version of Chrome Portable.

Step 1: If you already have Google Chrome installed on PC, uninstall it. Step 2: Create a folder named Chrome on the location you want to install Google Chrome. I created it in E: drive! Step 3: Download Symlink Creator. It’s a free and open-source tool. Launch it (make sure it is running with administrative privilege). To 'Google Chrome Portable' 5.) In the following registry keys change the value (double click on them.) Change the path from the normal (non-portable) chrome.exe to the GoogleChromePortable.exe path.

Verdict:

It’s not quite the pioneer it was, but Chrome continues to evolve interesting new features and performance tweaks to make it a decent alternative to your existing browser.

It also automatically signs you in to all your favorite Google services.

App Notes

Passwords Not Saved Between PCs By Default: Google Chrome stores passwords in such a way that they are encrypted in a way tied to current PC. While the passwords are not kept or left behind on the PC itself, they won't be retrievable when you move to a new PC. We've added password portability as an advanced option, though, which you can enable by reading the help.html file.

Certificates Not Portable: Google Chrome has no certificate manager. It uses Windows' certificates manager. So, any certificates you install through the Google Chrome interface are stored on the current local machine and will not travel with you. Thus, you should not use any private certificates with Google Chrome except on your own PC.

How To Get Google Chrome To Open

Some Settings/Extensions Locked Per PC: Google Chrome locks specific settings to a given PC. Details are included in this post. This behavior is by design by the Chrome team. If you would like this changed, please file a bug with the Chrome team. A suggested workaround is to sign in to Google to restore all settings and extensions and to use an extension such as Session Buddy to maintain your session state as you move PCs. Note that PortableApps.com has not evaluated this extension.

Note that other portable browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition do not have any of the issues mentioned above. These issues are specific to Chrome due to Chrome's design and not something we can work around without fixes to the base app by the Chrome developers.
