I’ve already shared how to insert math equation in PPT, and it is the same with MS Word. If the built-in equations don’t meet the actual needs, you could edit or modify them by equation tools or even write math equation by using handwriting board, especially those with complex symbols and structures.

Tip 1: Insert Math Equation

1. Go to Insert tab, find Symbols group and click Equation button.

Office XP and 2003 users can launch Equation Editor from Insert - Object - Microsoft Equation 3.0. And Office 2007 and 2010 users will find it from Object option under Insert Tab located at the upper right corner of the screen. As the Equation options are very critical so it is not possible to show them in written format in this blog page.

• Type the LaTeX code just as you do in LaTeX, Click the Generate button to generate LaTeX equations. If you want to update the equation, select the generated image, then click the Edit LaTeX display button under the IguanaTeX ribbon. After finishing editting, click the button Regenerate to regenerate the equation.

2. There are multiple equations in the drop-down list, then scroll down and select one of them to meet your actual needs.

3. If you do not find the specified equation under Built-In, just click More Equation from Office.com, there are always more choices for you in MS Word.

4. When the equation has been inserted in Word document, Equation Tools function will automatically appear in the Ribbon. Click Design and you can edit and modify Symbols or Structures of the equation in these two related groups.

1. Repeat the above steps, and click Ink New Equation in the drop-down list of Equation button.

2. The handwriting board will display on the page of Word, simply drag the mouse to write math equation. Note: If input error occurs, click the Erase button and select the error part to clear it; if identification error occurs, click Select and Correct button, then select the symbol which need to be modified, and pick the correct one in the pop-up list to replace it. If you want to re-write the match equation, click Clear button then everything in the handwriting board will be deleted.

How to install

Download the package from sourceforge, extract it. You will see something likethis,

For Office 2007 and later versions, copy the file texsword.dotm to thedirectory C:Users<USER_NAME>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWordSTARTUP,<USER_NAME> represents your user name. In case that you can not locatethis directory in this way, here is how you can find it in your computer:

• Click on the File ribbon (Office 2010) or Office button (Office 2007)
• Click Options
• Click Advanced
• Scroll down and find a button File Locations. Click on it.
• Find Startup folder in the list of the Word system folders.
• Remember where it is and close the Word. Copy the file.

If everything went well, upon next Word launch, you will see the TeXswordbuttons in the Add-Ins ribbon.

How to use

To insert equations, click the button with TeX label (see image above). Thereis also a shorcut to insert LaTeX equations: just pressALT+T.

Commercial and shareware

There is a well-known software MathType which support LaTeX syntax. The onlyproblem is that the license fee is too high for a student. I have found anothersoftware which is cheaper and can do the same thing. It is calledAxMath and is developed by a Chinese company.

You can use the software free with limited features¹ or you can purchase alicense for about $6.12 (￥39) to activate full feature.

After you have installed this software, a ribbon will appear in the Word menu.

You can insert inline, display and numbered equations. To change to the LaTeXinput mode, click the button in the lower right of panel or press shortcut keyCtrl+Tab.

It support LaTeX command auto-completion once you start typing , which isconvenient.

After finishing equations, you can use Shift+Enter torender the equations.

Install IguanaTex

To type LaTeX in PowerPoint, you can useIguanaTex.Download it fromhere.Following instructions on the website (there is a installation part) and setup IguanaTex properly. Then a ribbon with name IguanaTeX will appear inPowerPoint,

How to use

Type the LaTeX code just as you do in LaTeX,

Click the Generate button to generate LaTeX equations. If you want to updatethe equation, select the generated image, then click the Edit LaTeX displaybutton under the IguanaTeX ribbon. After finishing editting, click the buttonRegenerate to regenerate the equation.

How use Chinese character inside math mode?

By default the math mode in IguanTeX does not support Chinese character even ifyou have wrapped the characters with text{} command.

To use Chinese, you have to do several things:

• Install GhostScript².
• Install Imagemagick.
• Use pdflatex instead of the default latex command.

You also need to the set the path of GhostScript and Imagemagick executablefiles correctly in the IguanaTex settings, as shown below
